Hi, I’m John!
For the last few years, I’ve been coaching creative people, as well as consulting for studio owners and engineers looking to increase their profits without killing themselves.
My bio, in short, goes a bit like this:
I started playing in bands in high school, and recorded my first paid project in 1988, with a cassette four track and a Shure vocal master mixer. I studied recording for a couple of years, then moved to Phoenix, AZ.
In AZ, I continued playing with bands, and started working at a friend’s studio, assisting and helping out. From there I began doing some freelance work at various studios, recording lots of punk, surf, and indie acts. At the same time, I worked with my friends promoting concerts for loads of great bands, like Rancid, Fugazi, Jawbreaker, Built to Spill, etc.
By 1999, online businesses were all the rage, and my friend and I started a business selling Apple computer memorabilia. It went well, but after a few years, I was ready to go back into music full time. I sold my interest in the business, and put together a mobile recording rig. In 2005, I launched Suitcase Recordings. Over the next decade, I recorded tons of great local artists, still mostly punk, surf, garage, and indie. I created mixoff.org, a forum dedicated to sharing mixes and stems, and wrote this book.
I’m married to the love of my life, and have two amazing boys!
I think that about covers it!
